A letter from Greece
With a group of Dutch citizens we organized the action ‘a letter from Greece’.
We want to raise awareness about the dire situation of refugees stuck in Greece.
Our action includes almost 1000 personal letters, written by people in camps or other locations, telling about the situation they are in, expressing their feelings, their hopes and dreams, their questions to people in Europe.
We strongly believe that the stories of the many refugees living in Greece must be heard (read) and that the best way to tell them is by the people themselves.
We went to Greece and talked to many refugees in Lesvos, Samos and Athens. We invited them to write and tell ‘the world’ about their current life. Many people didn’t hesitate and took the opportunity. Although we could’nt promise any quick change in their situation we shared our hope that in the long run, we might influence the political will to improve the situation in the future.
After collecting and translating the letters we share them with the Dutch public in different locations along the coast and during the Capital Event in Amsterdam.
We delivere them as message in a bottle, as an S.O.S to the world.
On this website you find all the letters we collected from refugees in Greece.
The circumstances in which they have to live are inhumane and heartbreaking.
We advocate with all our hearts that the overcrowded, unsafe and unhygienic refugee camps must be closed. Europe has to start a responsible reception of people who have fled war and persecution.
We welcome you to read the (translated) letters, and hope you feel motivated to help bring change to the situation.
Please see the page with ‘What can you do?’ for ideas what you can do.
